The Professionals (Columbia, 1966)

 

A 60s actioner with good plot twists

 

As we have recently been looking at the Westerns of Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster, I thought we might today have a go at an oater that starred them both. One of the better offerings of the mid-1960s, The Professionals was well directed by Richard Brooks (he was nominated for an Oscar for it, but lost out to Fred Zinnemann for A Man for All Seasons).

 

Only three Westerns but all interesting

 

Brooks, the Elmer Gantry (with Burt) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof man, only directed three Westerns and to judge by the quality of the oaters he did, that was a pity because they were all rather good. His first was The Last Hunt, with Robert Taylor and Stewart Granger both very strong, then came The Professionals, and lastly, in 1975, the underrated Bite the Bullet, a 1906 horse race saga.

 

The Professionals was excellently acted by the principals: Marvin as the tough, steely boss, all military know-how, marksmanship and gritty determination; Lancaster as the smiling-roguish explosives expert (he had to be smiling-roguish); Woody Strode as the tracker and stealth man, skilled with the deadly bow and arrow; and Robert Ryan as the mild (though of course tough underneath) horse-loving wrangler.

 

Burt got top billing though Lee was the leader. Robert and Woody were the strong silent types.

 

It’s a great line up and Ralph Bellamy as the ruthless railroad magnate who hires them to rescue his wife from Mexican bandido Jesus Raza, and Jack Palance as said macho bandido, add to the strength of the cast.

Claudia Cardinale as the kidnapped wife is OK in the early scenes, when she doesn’t have to say much but is the weakest link once her dialogue starts. Still, it must have been hard to act in a second language with the accent of a third. Marie Gomez as the amorous soldatera Chiquita, however, is splendid.

The Professionals is a 1917 caper movie and an adventure yarn, and is full of action. There are explosions and shooting galore. The screenplay (Brooks from a Frank O’Rourke novel) contains some terrific lines, especially the last one, although it also contains some rather pretentious pontificating on the meaning of life and so forth.

 

I guess the picture’s reputation has suffered from the fact that three years later Sam Peckinpah made the definitive American-mercenaries-in-Mexico film. The Wild Bunch did rather put The Professionals in the shade. Still, the earlier movie has merit. I wonder if Peckinpah had seen it? Probably. The Professionals also has some similarity to the fine Garden of Evil (Fox, 1954), with Gary Cooper leading the band of Yanks below the Rio Grande – and The Magnificent Seven, come to that. Gringo gunmen in Mexico were a common feature of Westerns.

The movie also suffers from the rather unpleasant notion that it’s alright to shoot down or blow up Mexicans in large numbers because they have droopy mustaches and don’t shave and they are, well, foreign. By the mid-60s Mexicans had kind of replaced American Indians as slaughterees whom it is acceptable for the Americans to blow up or machine-gun.

The film is visually attractive, photographed by Conrad Hall at Lake Mead and the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada and in Death Valley, Cal., and we sense the ordeal of the journey and the heartless barrenness of the terrain.

Unfortunately, as with many films about Americans going down to Mexico, they all troop from right to left across the screen as they go down there and from left to right as they ride back, which is a bit crude.

Stunts are quite impressive (Cardinale’s stunt double was injured in the scene of the exploding canyon) as befits an action movie such as this. The music by Maurice Jarre is suitably stirring. You get the impression throughout that all the cast and crew were indeed professionals.

 

All in all it’s a racy 1960s actioner with good plot twists and some amusing lines. There’s an element of modern cynicism but the Western heroes still respect the basic code of honor and they do what a man’s gotta do. 1966 was not a vintage year for our noble genre. There were spaghettis (sigh), the rather tired John Wayne/Howard Hawks vehicle El Dorado, Nevada Smith (bof), those slightly off-the-wall Monte Hellman Westerns The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind, the absolutely dire James Stewart dud The Rare Breed, weak remakes of Shane and Stagecoach, and so on. So The Professionals didn’t have that much competition. But actually, it would have held its own in a good year too.

 

It got into the top ten box-office successes that year, by a long way the most popular Western, grossing $19m, so that was good. Bowley Crowther in The New York Times talked of “the abundance of hell-for-leather action and raw adventure”, though he added, “Take it for noisy adventure, accompanied by a Maurice Jarre score, and you may throb to Mr. Brooks’s The Professionals. But don’t expect anything else.” Variety said that “Exciting explosive sequences, good overall pacing and acting overcome a sometimes thin script.”

 

More recently, Brian Garfield in his Western Films remarked, “This noisy actioner is all commotion and splendidly entertaining, a ‘caper’ movie with dandy players and direction.” I agree with that.

  1. Kudo’s to Jack Palance as Mexican revolutionary/bandido Jesus Raza. He’s totally believable in the role and adds much to the second half of this rousing actioner.

    1. Got this one on DVD just last week. It’s quite good. Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster make for potent one-two punch, Marvin as the deadly serious military man and Lancaster as the slightly wild dynamite expert. I suspect Sergio Leone got the idea for James Coburn’s character in Fistful of Dynamite from The Professionals. Claudia Cardinale, as always, looks luscious. Ralph Bellamy does some overacting as the American tycoon who wants his wife back after an alleged kidnapping and hires “the professionals” to do the job.

      Strong action scenes in this one, especially the assualt on the revolutionarys’ stronghold.

        1. Seems there were quite a few Westerns set during the Mexican Revolution that were made circa 1965-1971. Must have been something in the air those days.

There are indeed common points (the commando-like story, the south of the border location – even if Brooks’ film was shot in the US -, the pictural quality, even Lee Marvin who had turned down Pike Bishop’s role…) but the treatment and the philosophy (to sum up) of each director are radically different.

    1. An interesting topic for an article would be to compare The Professionals, The Wild Bunch, and A Fistful of Dynamite. There are interesting aesthetic comparisons to be made as well as the respective films’ treatment of the matter of revolution.

Jeff wrote an excellent and quite extensive text about the western(s) south of the border where he is detailing many films and at the bottom of which I have added recently some lines about They Came to Cordura (By the way Walker starring Ed Harris is an other film that disappeared from this blog…).
        To me, the film about the so called fascinating “punitive expedition” lead by Pershing 110 years ago) into Mexico remains to be shot.
        And, talking of south of the border, but set prior to the Revolution, I eagerly await John Hillcoat’s Blood Meridian…!
        And yess, Thomas you are right about Robert Ryan, I just listed a few examples.
